History of Barrington

The first person to settle in Barrington arrived around the year 1800. However, it took several more years for other settlers to join them. The land where the town is located was once part of a large land deal known as the Phelps and Gorham Purchase.

The town of Barrington was officially created in 1822. At that time, it was part of Steuben County. It was formed from parts of two other towns, Reading and Wayne. In 1826, Barrington became part of Yates County, which had been created just one year earlier.

In 1865, a special kind of water source called a mineral spring was found in the southern part of the town. This discovery led to the growth of a place called Crystal Spring.

Barrington was also home to two popular country and western music bands. These were The Barrington Ridge Runners, who played from 1940 to 1960, and The Hill and Valley Boys, who played from 1957 to 1967. Many members of these bands were related to the very first families who settled in Barrington.

A historic building called the Spicer-Millard House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. This means it is an important place to protect because of its history.
