History of Bartlett
Bartlett was first called "Union Depot." It started as an important stop for stagecoaches traveling west from Nashville, Tennessee. Stagecoaches were like big horse-drawn buses! Later, a train station replaced the stagecoach stop. A small farming town grew around this station.
After the American Civil War, Bartlett grew quickly. By 1886, it had a school, churches, and stores. It officially became a city on November 1, 1866. At that time, fewer than 100 people lived there. Bryan Wither was the first Mayor. The city got its name from Major Gabriel M. Bartlett. He was an early settler whose home was on the old Raleigh-Somerville Road.
