The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is a very important church in Mazatlán, Mexico. It is also known as the Mazatlán Cathedral. This beautiful building is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mazatlán. You can find it in the historic center of the city. Its style is called Baroque-Revival, which means it looks like old Baroque buildings.

History of the Cathedral

Work on this grand church started a long time ago, in 1856. Bishop Pedro Loza y Pardavé gave the order to begin building it. After some time, a priest named Miguel Lacarra took over the project. The main construction was finished in 1899. The church was officially dedicated as a basilica on December 12, 1941.

What the Cathedral Looks Like

The Cathedral Basilica has a special layout with three main sections inside. All these sections are the same height, which is a unique design. It has a large, eight-sided dome on top. This dome has a small tower, called a lantern, and is topped with an iron cross. The church also has two tall towers. These towers have interesting tops that look like pyramids with their points cut off. Each tower is also crowned with a cross.
