The Battle of Elba
What Happened During the Battle?
The English ships, led by Captain Richard Badiley, were trying to get to a port called Livorno. Another English group of ships, led by Captain Henry Appleton, was stuck there. The Dutch ships were blocking them.
The Dutch commander, Johan van Galen, left four of his ships to keep watching Livorno. He then took his other ten ships to stop Badiley's English group. The two groups of ships met between the islands of Montecristo and Elba.
During the fight, the Dutch ship Jaarsveld captured the English ship Phoenix. The other English warships had to retreat to Porto Longone to be safe. However, the Phoenix was later taken back by the English in a surprise night attack at Livorno, about two months later.
