Bazil Ashmawy, known as Baz Ashmawy, is a well-known Irish TV and radio host. His TV show 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy won a big award called the International Emmy Award for Best Non-Scripted Entertainment.

In 2024, Baz created, wrote, and starred in a TV series called Faithless for Virgin Media Television. He also hosts The Money List and Best Place To Be for RTE One, and both shows have been renewed for more seasons. Baz is also the host of DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland. Early life and background

Baz Ashmawy was born in Libya. His mother, Nancy, is from Ballycoog, County Wicklow, Ireland. Baz is also part-Egyptian.

He moved to Ireland when he was eight years old. He grew up in a Dublin suburb called Churchtown. He went to CUS Leeson Street for some time.

Career highlights

Baz Ashmawy is widely known for his show 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy. This show first aired on Sky 1. The show features Baz taking his mother, Nancy, who was 71 at the time, on many daring adventures. It shows her funny and typical "Irish mammy" reactions to these exciting situations.

In November 2015, 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy won the Best Non-Scripted Entertainment award. This happened at the 2015 International Emmy Awards.

Before that, Baz was on the popular RTÉ Two travel show, How Low Can You Go?. He appeared on this show with co-presenters Mark O'Neill and Michael Hayes.

Baz's Culture Clash

Baz then started his own project called Baz's Culture Clash on RTÉ Two. He filmed this show around the world from September 2008 to April 2009. It aired in September and October 2009.

For this series, Baz visited a coven of witches in Kells, County Meath. He also tried hypnosis to connect with his Egyptian ancestors. Baz visited a haunted house with a group called "Leinster Paranormal". He also joined ghost hunters at the haunted Carlow Shopping Centre. The show was not very popular with critics.

His next project, Baz's Extreme Worlds, aired on May 10, 2010.

Acting and hosting

Besides being a TV host, Baz Ashmawy is also an actor. He has appeared in TV dramas and other shows. He has also acted in plays and short films. He feels that comedy comes easily to him. However, his acting background has also led him to perform in classic plays by writers like Shakespeare.

50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy success

The idea for 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy came about when Baz's mother, Nancy, who was 72, said she wanted to try a skydive. The first season of the show was one of the most-watched programs on Sky 1 in Ireland in 2014. The second season was also very popular.

The show has been sold by Sky Vision to over 150 places worldwide. This includes Canada, Australia, China, and the Middle East. Different versions of the show have been made in countries like Denmark, Holland, and Belgium. This has made 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy Sky Vision's most successful factual entertainment show so far.

In November 2015, the show won the Best Non-Scripted Entertainment award at the 2015 International Emmy Awards.

In 2016, Sky 1 aired the third season of the show. This season had a new twist: four new "Mammies" joined Baz and Nancy on their travels. Because of this, the show was then known as 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammies.

On October 12, 2017, Baz announced on Twitter that he and Nancy would film a special Christmas episode. This episode was shown only on RTÉ Ireland. Later, on November 12, they shared Snapchat videos of Nancy, Baz, and the crew at Dublin airport. They were waiting to fly to Rome for filming.

Change Your Tune

Baz Ashmawy hosted a music game show called Change Your Tune. It aired on ITV from April 1 to May 20, 2018. The show had six episodes and featured some of the UK’s worst singers. They received special vocal training for several weeks to get better. After their training, they performed again for a chance to win a £10,000 cash prize.

The show's music was created by Andrei Basirov and Toby Jarvis. When it first aired, many viewers thought it was an April Fools' Day joke. However, the show struggled to attract a large audience. ITV later moved it to an afternoon time slot and eventually canceled it after the first season.

Radio career

In July 2017, Baz Ashmawy hosted his radio show That Baz Thing on RTÉ Radio 1. On his show, he interviewed three different guests each week. He explored many topics, such as parenting, health, happiness, and relationships.

Baz also co-hosted Weekend Breakfast with Baz & Lucy on RTÉ 2fm with Lucy Kennedy for two years.

Personal life

Baz Ashmawy has two daughters named Hanna and Mahy. He is also a stepfather to four other children: Charlotte, Harry, Jake, and Amelia.

He once had a serious health issue when one of his lungs collapsed during a flight. He then had to have double-lung surgery.
