Beaver Mines is a small community, called a hamlet, located in southern Alberta, Canada. It sits in the beautiful foothills of the Canadian Rockies. You can find it along Highway 507, about 19 kilometers (12 miles) west of a town called Pincher Creek.

A Look Back in Time

Beaver Mines started as a busy place in the early 1900s. This happened when a coal mine opened nearby. At one point, over 1,500 people lived here!

However, during the big wars, a lot of steel was needed for things like railroad tracks. This meant less coal was needed. So, the coal mines slowly closed down. People started to move away from Beaver Mines. The very last mine stopped working in 1971. Today, the old mine site and many building foundations are on private land. For about 30 years, Beaver Mines was even considered a ghost town. It was written about in many books about ghost towns.

Beaver Mines Today

Recently, Beaver Mines has started to grow again. This is partly because of the expansion of Castle Mountain Resort, a popular ski area. Also, the city of Calgary to the north has been growing. Because of this, Beaver Mines is becoming a popular spot for fun outdoor activities and vacations.
