Beighton (/ˈbeɪtən, ˈbaɪ-/) is an area in the eastern part of Sheffield, England. It's one of the 28 "wards" in the city, which are like local neighborhoods or districts. Beighton ward includes the areas of Beighton, Hackenthorpe, Owlthorpe, and Sothall. It is located near the border with Rotherham. In 2011, about 17,939 people lived here.
For a long time, until 1967, parts of Beighton were actually in a different county called Derbyshire. Then, the area became part of Sheffield and was moved to the West Riding of Yorkshire. Finally, in 1974, Beighton became part of the City of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, where it is today.

Exploring the Beighton Ward Areas
The Beighton ward is made up of several interesting areas. Each one has its own unique history and features. Let's take a closer look at Beighton, Sothall, Owlthorpe, and Hackenthorpe.
Beighton: A Village Transformed

Beighton was once a small village, but it has grown a lot over the last 100 years. It is now a suburb of Sheffield. The name "Beighton" comes from an old word meaning "a farmstead beside a stream." This area was even mentioned in the Domesday Book way back in 1086!
Some parts of the old village are still around. For example, the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin was built in the 12th century. Many houses built in the early 1900s were for coal miners, as coal mining was important here. More recently, new private homes have been built.
Just outside Beighton, you can find the Rother Valley Country Park. It's a popular spot for water sports on its artificial lakes. There was also a railway station in Beighton, which was part of the Great Central Main Line.
Sothall: Home to Schools
Sothall is another area within the Beighton ward. It also includes a neighborhood called Meadowgate. You might hear of a place called Southall, but don't get them mixed up – they are different!
Sothall is home to two main schools for younger children. Brook House Junior School teaches children aged 7 to 11 (Years 3 to 6). Beighton Nursery Infant School has a nursery section for babies and toddlers (0-4 years) and an infant school for children aged 4 to 7 (Reception to Year 2).
Owlthorpe: A Modern Residential Area
Owlthorpe is mostly a residential area, meaning it's full of homes. It's located near Hackenthorpe, Birley, and Waterthorpe. Until the late 1980s, Owlthorpe was mostly countryside. Then, big plans were made to build many new homes, and the area changed a lot.
The Sheffield Supertram runs around the Owlthorpe area. You can easily get on the tram at three stops: Birley Moor Road, Hackenthorpe, or Donetsk Way.
Hackenthorpe: A Historic Village
Hackenthorpe is a village about 5 miles southeast of Sheffield's city center. It's now considered a historic part of the city. Like Beighton, Hackenthorpe grew and became part of Sheffield in the 1950s.
In the late 1800s and 1900s, Hackenthorpe was known for making steel. The Thomas Staniforth & Co sickle works, which made tools, was located on Main Street. Another important building is Hackenthorpe Hall. This old house was built in the 17th century and is now used as a nursery. Hackenthorpe was once part of Derbyshire, like Beighton, but it is now in South Yorkshire.
