About Ben Sainsbury
Early Life and Education
Ben Sainsbury was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. When he was young, his family moved to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, where he lived for eight years. After that, they returned to Canada, settling in Seguin, Ontario. Ben went to high school in Rosseau, Ontario.
After finishing high school, Ben spent 16 years living in California and Arizona. During this time, he studied acting. He earned a bachelor's degree in filmmaking from College of Marin. Later, in 2005, he received a master's degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California film school. While studying, he also worked as an actor in commercials to help pay for his education and film projects.
Creative Work and Army Experience
Ben Sainsbury holds citizenship in both Canada and the U.S. He also served in the U.S. Army for three years. He worked in a special unit that focused on communication and information. They used creative ways to share messages, like broadcasting sounds or distributing leaflets. This experience later inspired some of his film work.
His animated film, Private Snuffy, was based on an article he wrote about these experiences for Now Magazine in Toronto. He received a grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund to help complete this film. To make a living, Ben also sells computer software in Toronto.
While studying for his PhD in media studies in Switzerland, Ben became a freelance reporter for PeaceReporter, a newspaper in Milan, Italy. He wrote articles about his military service for them. The article he wrote for Now Magazine, which inspired Private Snuffy, was even translated into Italian for PeaceReporter. Private Snuffy first showed on April 12, 2011, at the Tiburon International Film Festival in Tiburon, California. It later won the 'Best Animation Award' at the 2011 Cinefest in Sudbury, Ontario.
Ben also co-founded and is the CEO of Marion Surgical. This company creates virtual reality simulations to help train surgeons.
