The College of Marin is a public community college located in Marin County, California. It has two main campuses: one in Kentfield and another in Novato. This college is the only school run by the Marin Community College District.

The College of Marin first opened its doors in 1926. Each semester, about 10,000 students take more than 1,100 classes that count for college credit. Around 100 students from other countries also study here. Plus, nearly 6,000 people attend community classes for fun or to learn new skills. The college is especially known for its theater department. It has the best record in the country for sending students from a two-year college to the famous Juilliard.

College History and Programs

The College of Marin offers many different study programs. You can earn an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree. These are two-year degrees that can help you start a career or prepare you to transfer to a four-year university. The college has over 200 agreements with universities like the University of California and California State University. These agreements make it easier for students to transfer their credits.

The college also has 35 two-year programs that teach specific job skills. These are called vocational and career programs. You can also take classes to improve basic skills, learn English as a second language, or join community education classes.

The college was first called Marin Junior College when it started in 1926. In 1947, its name changed to College of Marin. Later, in 1985, it joined with Indian Valley College. This merger gave Marin County residents two campuses: the original one in Kentfield and the Indian Valley Campus in Novato. These two campuses serve about 250,000 people in the county.

Student Newspaper: The Echo Times

The Echo Times is the college's student-run newspaper. It comes out every month and shares news and stories from the college community.

How the College is Run

The College of Marin is part of the Marin Community College District (MCCD). This district manages the community colleges in Marin County, California. The MCCD is special because it gets most of its money from local property taxes. This means it relies less on state funding compared to other college districts.

The MCCD is managed by a group of seven people called the board of trustees. These members are elected by people in the community for four-year terms. Elections happen every two years. Students also get to elect one student trustee. This student trustee serves for one year and can join discussions and suggest ideas. However, they do not vote on certain topics like real estate or staff issues.

Student Government

In 1927, the students at College of Marin formed a group called "The Associated Students of Marin Junior College." This group officially became a corporation in 1932. Later, in 1991, its name changed to "Associated Students College of Marin."

This student group is important because it is the official voice for students. It helps students share their ideas and concerns with the college leaders. The college's Board of Trustees recognizes this group as the main way students can participate in decisions that affect them.
