Benny Douglas (born July 22, 1971), known professionally as Benny Boom, is an American director. He has directed many music videos, TV shows, and movies. His most famous film is All Eyez on Me from 2017. This movie tells the life story of the rapper Tupac Shakur.

Becoming a Director

Benny Douglas was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in different parts of the city. He went to Temple University to study film. After college, he moved to New York City. There, he worked with a hip hop group called Channel Live. He got his nickname "Boom" from a famous boxer, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini.

Benny Boom got his start in the film industry as an assistant. He worked on the set of the 1995 Spike Lee movie Clockers. Later, he assisted well-known music video directors. These included Hype Williams, Director X, and Paul Hunter.

Directing Music Videos

In the 2000s, Benny Boom started directing music videos on his own. He worked with many popular artists. Some of these artists include Nas, Nelly, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Nicki Minaj, Sean Combs, Keyshia Cole, Akon, Ciara, and 50 Cent.

His work earned him several awards. He won the Video Director of the Year award from B.E.T. in 2009 and 2013. He also won three BET Hip Hop Awards for Video Director of the Year. The BET Award for Video Director of the Year started in 2008. Benny Boom has received the most nominations for this award, with sixteen.

One of his notable music videos is ""Do We Have a Problem"". This nine-minute video features Nicki Minaj and Lil Baby. It also stars actors Cory Hardrict and Joseph Sikora. The video was released in February 2022. It won the award for Best Hip-Hop Video at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.

Besides music videos, Benny Boom has also directed commercials. He has created ads for big brands like Jeep, Honda, Gatorade, and Sears.

Directing Films and TV Shows

In 2009, Benny Boom directed his first full-length movie. It was a comedy called Next Day Air. The film starred actors like Mike Epps and Mos Def. His second movie was an action drama, S.W.A.T.: Firefight, released in 2011.

His most well-known film is All Eyez on Me. This movie tells the story of the famous rapper Tupac Shakur. It was released in June 2017.

Benny Boom also started directing for television in 2013. His first TV directing job was an episode of 90210 on The CW Network. In 2015, he directed the entire second season of a boxing reality show called Knock Out for FuseTV. He continued his TV career in 2016. He directed episodes of popular dramas like NCIS: Los Angeles and Empire. Empire starred famous actors Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard. From 2019, Benny Boom became a director for the second season of The CW show, All American.
