Berden is a small village in Essex, England. It is also a "civil parish," which means it has its own local government. Berden is about 6 miles (10 km) north of Bishop's Stortford. It is also about 21 miles (34 km) northwest of Chelmsford, which is the main town of Essex.
In 2011, about 465 people lived in Berden. This number was a bit higher than in 2001, when 427 people lived there. Berden is mentioned in a very old book called the Domesday Book. This book was made in 1086 to record who owned land in England.
Exploring Berden Village
Berden is located in the Uttlesford district of Essex. It is part of the Saffron Walden area for the UK Parliament. This means people in Berden vote for a Member of Parliament (MP) who represents their area.
A Look at Berden's History
Berden has a long history. It was once part of an old area called Clavering hundred. The Domesday Book from 1086 shows that Berden was a small settlement. At that time, it had four villagers and five smallholders, who were people who owned small plots of land.
St Nicholas' Church
The main church in Berden is called St Nicholas' Church. It is a parish church. This church has been an important part of the village for many years.
Berden Hall
Berden Hall is another historic building in the village. It was built around the 1580s. However, there was a manor house and a priory (a type of monastery) in Berden even earlier, during medieval times.
