How Berlin Got Its Name
The town of Berlin was not always called Berlin. It was first known as Hobart. This name might have come from Garret Hobart, who was a Vice President of the United States. A post office opened in Hobart in 1895 but closed just eight years later.
Around 1914, the town's name was changed to Berlin. This new name honored the capital city of Germany. Many people living in the town at that time had German family backgrounds. John Kreitner chose the new name.
Becoming an Official Town
Berlin officially became an incorporated town in 2018. This means that residents voted to create their own local government. The vote was 45 to 23 in favor of becoming a town.
The Lidy Walker Covered Bridge
Just north of Berlin, there used to be a historic bridge called the Lidy Walker Covered Bridge. It was located on Lidy's Lake from 1958 until it fell down in 2001. This bridge was originally built in 1926 near Blountsville in Blount County. It was moved to Berlin 32 years later.
