Bennie Bernard Williams (born July 18, 1972) is an American former professional football player. He played as an offensive tackle, a position that protects the quarterback. Bernard was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the 1994 NFL draft. He was the 14th player picked overall.
He played for one season with the Eagles. After his first year, he was suspended by the National Football League (NFL) for not following league rules. He never returned to play in the NFL. Bernard later played for other football leagues. These included the Canadian Football League (CFL), the XFL, and the Arena Football League (AFL).
Playing Professional Football
Bernard Williams was a top player in college. The Philadelphia Eagles picked him early in the 1994 NFL Draft. He started every game for the Eagles in his first year, playing as a left tackle. This means he was a key player protecting the quarterback. He was even named to the All-Rookie team that season.
After his rookie year, Bernard was suspended from the NFL. He did not apply to return to the league. He stayed on the Eagles' suspended list for a very long time. He was finally removed from their list in 2023.
Bernard continued his football career in other leagues. In 2000, he played five games for the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League. The next year, he was the starting left tackle for the Memphis Maniax in the XFL. From 2001 to 2002, he played for the Detroit Fury in the Arena Football League.
His longest time in professional football was with the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL. He played for them from 2003 to 2006. During this time, he helped his team win the Grey Cup in 2004. He was also named an East Division All-Star in both 2005 and 2006.
Life After Football
After his football career, Bernard Williams became a high school football coach. He helped train his nephew, Eric Berry, who later became a successful NFL safety. Bernard and Eric also started some businesses together. They opened a vintage car store and a juice bar.
Bernard has continued to be active in his community. In 2015, he made some healthy lifestyle changes. As of 2023, he was studying for a psychology degree. He also works as a driver for Amazon. In his free time, he volunteers as a firefighter and enjoys restoring old cars.
His cousin, Ray Brown, also played in the NFL. Ray had a very long career, playing for 20 seasons.
