Bernd Förster is a former German football player. He was born on May 3, 1956. He mostly played as a defender and sometimes as a midfielder.
His younger brother, Karlheinz, was also a football player and a defender. Both brothers played for the club VfB Stuttgart for a long time. They even won the European Championship together in 1980.

Bernd Förster's Club Career
Starting Out in Football
Bernd Förster began his professional football journey at SV Waldhof Mannheim. This team played in the 2. Bundesliga, which is Germany's second-highest football league.
In January 1975, he moved to one of Germany's biggest clubs, FC Bayern Munich. However, his time there was not very successful. He only played a few games. He did play twice in the European Cup in the 1975–76 season, which Bayern Munich won.
Playing for 1. FC Saarbrücken
After leaving Bayern Munich, Förster joined 1. FC Saarbrücken. Here, he became a regular player in the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league. He showed his skills and became an important part of the team.
Success at VfB Stuttgart
When 1. FC Saarbrücken was moved down to a lower league, Förster joined VfB Stuttgart. This is where he really shined! He became a key defender for the team. He often played alongside his brother, Karlheinz, in the defense.
Bernd Förster played many games for Stuttgart. He scored 25 goals in 291 top-division league matches during his career. He was a very important player when Stuttgart won the German national league title in 1984. He played 31 matches and scored two goals that season. He stopped playing football in 1986, when he was only 30 years old.

Playing for West Germany
Bernd Förster played for the West Germany national team. His first game was on May 22, 1979. It was a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland, and West Germany won 3–1.
European Champions in 1980
In 1980, he played two matches in the UEFA European Football Championship. West Germany won this tournament, becoming the champions of Europe! His brother Karlheinz was also on the team, making it a special win for both of them.
World Cup Final in 1982
Bernd Förster also played in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He started playing in the second group stage of the tournament. From then on, he played in every match as West Germany made it all the way to the final. They ended up as the runners-up, meaning they came in second place.
Bernd and Karlheinz Förster were the first brothers in German football history to play in a World Cup final since Ottmar and Fritz Walter did in 1954. The Walter brothers won their final, while the Förster brothers were defeated.
Retirement from International Play
Förster stopped playing for the national team after UEFA Euro 1984 in France. Germany was knocked out of the tournament in the group stage. This happened after Spain scored a last-minute goal against them. In total, Bernd Förster played 33 games for West Germany.
