Bernhard "Bernd" Georg Josef Förster (born on May 3, 1956) is a former German footballer. He mostly played as a defender. Sometimes, he also played as a midfielder.
Bernd's younger brother, Karlheinz, was also a famous footballer. He was a defender too. Both brothers played for the club VfB Stuttgart for many years. They also won the European Championship together in 1980.

Bernd Förster's Football Journey
Starting His Club Career
Bernd Förster began his professional football career at SV Waldhof Mannheim. This team played in the second division of German football. In January 1975, he moved to one of Germany's biggest clubs, FC Bayern Munich. However, he did not play much there. He only appeared in two matches during their winning European Cup campaign in 1975–76.
Playing for VfB Stuttgart
After leaving Bayern Munich, Förster played for 1. FC Saarbrücken. He became a regular player in the top league. When Saarbrücken was moved down to a lower league, Förster joined VfB Stuttgart. This was a big move for him.
At Stuttgart, he became a very important defender. He often played alongside his brother, Karlheinz, in the team's defense. Bernd Förster played 291 top-division league matches in total. He scored 25 goals during his career. He was a key player when Stuttgart won the national league title in 1984. He played 31 matches and scored two goals that season. Bernd Förster stopped playing football in 1986. He was only 30 years old when he retired.
Playing for West Germany
Bernd Förster played his first game for the West Germany national team on May 22, 1979. It was a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland, which West Germany won 3–1.
In 1980, he played in two matches at the UEFA European Football Championship. West Germany won this big tournament. Bernd and his brother Karlheinz were both part of the winning team.
At the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Förster started playing in the second part of the tournament. From then on, he played in every match. West Germany reached the final but finished as runner-up. Bernd and Karlheinz became the first brothers from Germany to play in a World Cup final since 1954. In 1954, the Walter brothers, Ottmar and Fritz, won the World Cup. Bernd and Karlheinz were the first brothers to play in a World Cup final and lose.
Förster stopped playing for the national team after UEFA Euro 1984 in France. Germany was knocked out of the tournament in the group stage. This happened after Spain scored a goal in the last minute. In total, Bernd Förster played 33 games for West Germany.
