Mosbach's Location and Nature
Mosbach is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) east of Heidelberg. It sits south of the Odenwald mountains. The town is located where two rivers, the Neckar and the Elz, meet. This meeting point is called a confluence.
The town is also part of two important nature areas. These are the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park and the UNESCO Bergstrasse-Odenwald Nature Park. These parks help protect the local plants and animals.
A Look at Mosbach's Past
Mosbach started as a small settlement around a Benedictine monastery. This monastery was called Mosbach Abbey. The first time Mosbach was written about was in the 800s.
In 1241, Mosbach gained special rights. It became an Imperial free city. This meant it could govern itself, almost like its own small country. But in 1362, Mosbach lost these rights. It became part of the Electorate of the Palatinate. This was a powerful territory in Germany.
Later, in 1410, Mosbach became the capital of a small area called Palatinate-Mosbach. This happened when King Rupert divided his lands. His son, Otto I, received this area.
This small principality grew in 1443. It joined with another area called Palatinate-Neumarkt. This new, larger area was called Palatinate-Mosbach-Neumarkt. But this union ended in 1499. The city and its lands went back to the Electorate of the Palatinate. Mosbach then became the main town of the "Oberamt Mosbach" district.
In 1806, Mosbach became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. During World War II, a secret factory was in the Mosbach area. It was an underground airplane engine factory. It was called "Goldfisch" and was owned by Daimler-Benz.
Mosbach's Twin Towns
Mosbach has special friendships with other towns around the world. These are called "twin towns" or "sister cities." They often share culture and ideas.
