Discovering Ancient Worlds
This museum aims to show you the history of different peoples from biblical times. It helps you understand their stories and how they fit into the bigger picture of history. The museum is located in Givat Ram, Jerusalem. It is close to other important museums like the Israel Museum and the Bloomfield Science Museum.
How the Museum Started
The museum was created by a person named Elie Borowski in 1992. He wanted a place to share his amazing collection of ancient art. In 1981, he met Batya Weiss in Jerusalem. She encouraged him to bring his collection to Israel. She also helped him connect with the mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek.
Elie Borowski followed her advice. He built the Bible Lands Museum and moved his collection from a museum in Toronto to Jerusalem. Elie and Batya later got married. The city of Jerusalem gave the land for the museum. Building it cost about $12 million.
What You Can See Inside
The main part of the museum has hundreds of ancient objects. You can see old documents, statues, coins, weapons, pottery, and special seals. These items come from all over the ancient Near East. Many displays have short articles on the walls. These explain interesting topics like how the alphabet began or Abraham's journey.
The museum also shows cool models. You can see what Jerusalem might have looked like during the First Temple period. There are also models of a Ziggurat from Ur and the famous pyramids of Giza. The museum focuses on the history of ancient civilizations. But it also connects these items to verses from the Bible. For example, above some ancient jugs, you might see a Bible verse about Rebecca drawing water.
