Bickley is a suburb located within the City of Kalamunda, in Perth, Western Australia. It is known for its natural beauty and the brook that shares its name. This area sits on the Darling Scarp, which is a large hillside.
Before 1949, Bickley was an important stop on the Upper Darling Range Railway. It was first called "Heidelburg" or "Heidelberg". However, during World War I, the railway company changed its name. They renamed it "Bickley" to honor Wallace Bickley, a local pioneer.
Over the years, Bickley has been a popular spot for holiday camps. It also hosts important facilities. For example, the main television towers for the Seven Network and Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Perth are located here. These towers have been broadcasting since television started in Perth in 1959.
The Perth Observatory, a place where scientists study stars and planets, is also in Bickley. It used to be in West Perth but moved here. Bickley is also a major weather station for the Perth area. Its location on the Darling Scarp helps it collect important weather data. The suburb is also home to water reservoirs, which store water for the community.
Bickley's Climate
Bickley has a Mediterranean climate, just like the rest of Perth. This means it has hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. You might see this climate type listed as Csa in the Köppen climate classification system.
A Special Microclimate
Bickley is unique because it often gets more rain than other parts of Perth. It also has cooler nights. This creates a special "microclimate" in the area. A microclimate is like a small weather zone that is different from the surrounding region.
