Life and Music Career
1978–2007: How He Got Started
Big Kuntry King was born in Charleston, South Carolina. When he was in the fifth grade, he and his mother moved to Atlanta, Georgia, looking for a better life. His mom worked two jobs and went to college to support her family.
As a teenager, Kuntry started rapping to earn extra money. In 1996, he became friends with a local rapper named T.I., who was already known for his great lyrics. Together, they sold their own music tapes, called mixtapes, from their car. Rapping was their way to build a better future and become known in their neighborhood.
Big Kuntry King's first big break came in 2001 when he was featured on T.I.'s first album, I'm Serious, on the song "Heavy Chevys." He also appeared on T.I.'s later albums, like Trap Muzik (2003) and Urban Legend (2004).
As a member of the group ... $quad Click, he helped release the album 25 to Life in 2005. The album's main song, "I'm a King" featuring Lil' Scrappy, introduced Big Kuntry to a much larger audience. However, at the time, the record label focused more on another artist, Young Dro. This made Big Kuntry determined to work even harder on his own music. He said to himself, "I have to step this up."
In 2006, he was featured on the remix of T.I.'s song "Top Back" with other artists. The remix was part of the Grand Hustle album Grand Hustle Presents: In da Streetz Volume 4.
2008–present: My Turn to Eat
While T.I. and other artists were on tour in Japan, Big Kuntry King stayed in the studio and worked on his own songs. He created catchy tracks like "Yeah I'm On It" and "That's Right." He even used his own money to get his music played on the radio and in clubs.
His hard work paid off. He signed a solo contract with Atlantic Records and released his first album, My Turn to Eat. He chose the title because he felt it was his time to succeed. He said, "I always thought it was my turn to eat 'cause I'm hungry."
The album featured songs with beats from some of Atlanta's best producers. On the song "Pots and Pans," he raps about the style of music he grew up with. On another track, "Soul of a Man," he talks about the challenges people face every day. He was proud of his album, saying, "If you listen to my album you're going to be rockin' the whole time."
On February 27, 2012, Big Kuntry King released a mixtape called 100% (KANE). On December 12, 2012, he released another mixtape, ... & Champagne.
