Vernell Eufaye "Bimbo" Coles was born on April 22, 1968. He is an American retired professional basketball player. He played for 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bimbo Coles played college basketball for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He also won an Olympic bronze medal in 1988 with the United States national team. His cousin gave him the nickname "Bimbo" because of a country music song with the same name.

Early Life and High School Sports

Bimbo Coles was a star athlete at Greenbrier East High School in Lewisburg, West Virginia. He played three different sports there: basketball, baseball, and football.

Coles was actually more wanted by colleges for football than for basketball. He was named all-state twice in football. He was also named All-America once. As a baseball player, he was a shortstop and outfielder. Coles said he was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1986 Major League Baseball draft. However, he decided to play basketball in college.

College Basketball Career

Bimbo Coles played college basketball for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He played there for four seasons, from 1986 to 1990. During his time at Virginia Tech, Coles set some impressive records.

  • Coles holds the school record for career assists.

Because of his amazing college career, he was honored in two halls of fame. He was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. He also joined the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

Olympic Medalist

Bimbo Coles was part of the United States national basketball team. This team won a bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics. This was a big achievement for him and his team.

Even though he hadn't played baseball since high school, Coles was drafted again. The California Angels picked him in the final round of the 1990 Major League Baseball draft.

Professional NBA Career

Bimbo Coles started his NBA career in 1990. The Sacramento Kings picked him in the 1990 NBA draft. Right after being drafted, he was traded to the Miami Heat. He was traded for another player named Rory Sparrow.

Coles played for the Miami Heat first. Later, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He also played for the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics. Throughout his NBA career, he mostly played as a backup point guard.

Coaching and Family

Bimbo Coles has a brother named Sidney. Sidney also played basketball in college. He played for Memphis and Marshall.

After his playing career, Bimbo Coles became a coach. He coached at his old high school, Greenbrier East High School. He coached there until 2021.
