Birgisch was once a small town, also known as a municipality, located in the Valais area of Switzerland. It was part of the Brig district.

On January 1, 2013, Birgisch joined with another town called Mund. They both became part of the larger municipality of Naters.

History of Birgisch

Birgisch is quite old! The first time anyone wrote about Birgisch was in the year 1232. Back then, it was called Burginse.

Geography of Birgisch

Before it joined Naters, Birgisch covered an area of about 5.7 square kilometers (2.2 square miles).

  • A big part of this land, about 37.9%, was used for farming.
  • Almost half, 46.5%, was covered by forests.
  • Only a small part, 3.0%, had buildings or roads.
  • The remaining 12.6% was land that couldn't be used for anything.

Birgisch is located high up, on the right side of the Rhone river. It includes the main village of Birgisch and many smaller settlements called hamlets.
