Mund was once a small town, also known as a municipality, located in the Brig area of Valais, a canton (like a state) in Switzerland. On January 1, 2013, Mund joined with another town called Birgisch. Together, they became part of the larger municipality of Naters.

History of Mund

Mund was first mentioned in old records way back in 1259. At that time, it was called Munt. For a long time, until about 1800, people usually knew it as Wyler. The name Wyler was last used in 1850.

Geography and Location

Before it joined Naters, Mund covered an area of about 40.2 km2 (15.5 sq mi). A good part of this land, about 24%, was used for farming. Forests covered another 20% of the area. Only a small part, less than 1%, had buildings or roads. More than half of the land, about 55%, was unproductive, meaning it couldn't be used for farming or building.

Mund is located in the Brig district. It sits on the northern side of the Rhone valley, high up at about 1,200 m (3,900 ft) above sea level.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Mund has a special design. It shows a golden bishop's hat (called a Mitre) and a silver shepherd's crook (called a Crosier). These two symbols are crossed over each other on a red background.

In 2010, Mund had a population of 528 people. A small number of these residents, about 2%, were from other countries in 2008. Over the ten years from 1999 to 2009, the number of people living in Mund went down by about 12.8%. This change was mostly because people moved away.

Most people in Mund speak German. In 2000, almost everyone, about 99.5%, spoke German as their main language. A very small number of people spoke Italian or English.

In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males and females. About 50.8% were male and 49.2% were female. Most of the people living in Mund in 2000 were born there, about 77.9%. Others were born in the same canton or elsewhere in Switzerland.
