Biscarrosse is a town in southwestern France. It is part of the Landes area in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The town is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Bordeaux. It is also about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Atlantic coast, where you'll find the beach resort of Biscarrosse-Plage.
Near Biscarrosse, there's a special place called the CEL. This is a national test center where many French military rockets are tested. The CEL also launches rockets for peaceful purposes, like studying the upper parts of Earth's atmosphere.
Close to the town center, outside the Café de l'orme, there used to be a very old elm tree. People believed it was the oldest elm tree in Europe! It was planted way back in 1350. Sadly, this Field Elm Ulmus minor died in 2010 because of a tree disease called Dutch elm disease.
The town also has its own airport, called Biscarrosse - Parentis Airport.

Seaplanes and History
Near Biscarrosse, in a place called Hourtiquet, there was once a very important seaplane base. Seaplanes are airplanes that can take off and land on water. This base was used by famous aircraft builders like Latécoère and early airlines such as Aéropostale and Air France.
Today, you can visit a seaplane museum on the shores of the Lac de Biscarrosse et de Parentis. It tells the story of these amazing flying boats.
During World War II, the base was used by German military seaplanes. Years later, in the 1980s, two old German seaplanes called Dornier 24 were found and recovered from the lake!
Since 1991, seaplane fans have gathered at the lake every two years for special fly-in events.
Oil Discovery
After seaplanes became less common, the lake area became important for another reason: oil! Oil was discovered there, and it turns out to be the largest oil reserve in France. The oil is taken out of the ground near the lake, in the town of Parentis.
Learning and Education
Biscarrosse is home to a school called École nationale de l'aviation civile. This is a national school for civil aviation, where people learn about flying and working in the airline industry.
