History of Bison, Kansas
Bison was officially planned out in 1888 by the Missouri Pacific Railroad. When a town is "platted," it means its streets and building lots are carefully mapped out. The city was named after the American bison, which are large animals that used to roam freely in this area.
The first post office in Bison opened its doors in May 1888. This helped the growing community stay connected.
