Bizen Province facts for kids
Bizen Province (備前国, Bizen-no kuni) was an old province in Japan. It was located in the area that is now Okayama Prefecture on the island of Honshū. Sometimes, Bizen was grouped with Bitchū and Bingo Provinces. Together, they were known as Bishū (備州).
Bizen Province shared its borders with Mimasaka, Harima, and Bitchū Provinces. The ancient capital city of Bizen was located close to what is now Okayama.
History of Bizen Province

A long time ago, in the year 713, during the Wadō era, Bizen Province was created. It was separated from Mimasaka Province (美作国) to form its own area.
Much later, in the Meiji period (which started in 1868), Japan went through many changes. The old provinces, like Bizen, were changed into new areas called prefectures. The maps of Japan were updated in the 1870s to show these new prefectures.
Important Shrines and Temples
Kitbitsuhiko jinja was the most important Shinto shrine in Bizen. It was known as the ichinomiya, which means it was the chief shrine of the province.
