Early Life and Name
Black Cobain was born in Alexandria, Virginia. He loved hip hop music from a young age. His stage name, "Black Cobain," comes from two places. "Black" was his childhood nickname. "Cobain" is a tribute to his uncle, who introduced him to rock and roll music and the famous band Nirvana, led by Kurt Cobain.
After high school, Black Cobain went to Virginia State University and graduated with high honors. He then worked at the Boys & Girls Club. He wasn't sure if he could make a living as a rapper, also known as an emcee.
During this time, he met his friend and mentor, Le'Greg O. Harrison. With Harrison's help, Black Cobain started to improve his music. He performed at local shows, worked with other artists, and practiced his skills. In 2009, he signed with the music label The Board Administration and decided to focus on his music career full-time.
Music Career
Getting Started (2008–2010)
To build his reputation, Black Cobain performed at many local events in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas. Even though he was connected to the famous rapper Wale, he wanted to become known for his own talent first. He believed in earning success through hard work.
After performing and releasing freestyle raps, Black Cobain released his first mixtape, Now or Never. This mixtape was about growing up and the challenges of life in the city. A year later, he released his second mixtape, Now. This project showed how much he had grown as an artist. It included guest appearances from famous musicians like Wale, Raheem Devaughn, J. Holiday, and Wiz Khalifa.
Gaining Fame (2011–Present)
In 2011, Black Cobain released another mixtape called Young, Gifted & Black. It featured artists like Wale and Stalley.
He became well-known by touring worldwide as the opening act for Wale's Ambition Tour from 2011 to 2012. Because of his growing popularity, XXL magazine considered him for its 2012 "Freshman Class," a list of promising new rappers.
In April 2012, he released his fourth mixtape, Cheers. It featured several guest artists and producers. That same month, he toured the United Kingdom as part of a special show called "Carbon Life," which combined rap music with the Royal Ballet. He performed alongside famous singers like Boy George.
In August 2012, Black Cobain was an opening act for the Meek Mill Dreams and Nightmares Tour. He was also featured on the remix of Wale's song Bag of Money, along with other famous rappers like Rick Ross and Lil Wayne.
Black Cobain is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, which he joined while at Virginia State University.
