There are many lakes called Black Lake in Nova Scotia, Canada. These lakes are all different sizes and depths. Some areas, like Cumberland and Halifax, have more than one Black Lake! This article will tell you about some of them.

Black Lakes in Nova Scotia
Colchester County's Black Lake
In Colchester County, Nova Scotia, you'll find a Black Lake. It's located south of Route 256 and north of Highway 104, close to Clear Lake.
Cumberland County's Deep Lakes
There are two Black Lakes in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. One of them is the deepest lake in the whole province! It goes down about 72 meters (236 feet). This deep lake is about 5.7 miles (9.2 km) northeast of Parrsboro. You can find fish like brown trout, white perch, and smallmouth bass here.
The area around this lake has many black spruce trees. There are also lots of shrubs and sphagnum moss. In 2005, a nearby forest had about 200 special Northern White Cedar trees.
The other Black Lake in Cumberland County is between Springhill and Oxford. In 2010, about 200 eastern white cedar trees were found near this lake. Some of these trees were 148 years old!
Guysborough County's Black Lake
The Black Lake in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia is west of where Route 316 meets Old Country Harbour Road. It's also northeast of Eight Island Lake.
Halifax's Five Black Lakes
There are five Black Lakes in the Halifax Regional Municipality. One of them is in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, east of the Bedford Basin. This lake is surrounded by city areas.
In 1948, people tried to make the water cleaner in one of these lakes. They added special materials to help improve the water quality.
Inverness County's Lake Pair
"Black Lakes" is actually a pair of lakes on Cape Breton Island. They are in Inverness County, Nova Scotia, in the northwest part of Nova Scotia, Canada. Water from these lakes flows into Bras d'Or Lake through MacIntyres Brook.
Lunenburg County's Black Lake
The Black Lake in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia is west of Route 208 and Zwicker Falls. It's about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away. The closest town is New Germany, which is further east.
Pictou County's Four Lakes
There are four Black Lakes in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. One of them is just west of Eden Lake. The East River, Pictou, drains this lake, and its water flows into the Northumberland Strait. The land around this lake is mostly used for forestry.
Chain Pickerel in Pictou Lake
Around 1998, a fish called the Chain pickerel was brought into this lake. This fish is not native to Nova Scotia. Before the pickerel arrived, the lake had many speckled trout and other fish. But after the pickerel were introduced, the trout, perch, and minnows disappeared.
In 1998, it was thought there were about 1,100 pickerel in the lake. Some of them weighed as much as 1.25 kilograms (2.75 pounds)!
Fishing for Pickerel
This lake is open for winter fishing of chain pickerel if you have a general fishing license. For example, in 2006 and 2011, the winter fishing season was from January 1 to March 31. People could catch up to 25 fish per day. In 2011, for a short time, people could fish without a license. By 2012, the lake was open all year for chain pickerel fishing.
Queens County's Black Lake
Black Lake in Queens County, Nova Scotia is near the eastern side of Lake Rossignol. It's also northwest of Georges Lake.
Victoria County's High Lake
Black Lake in Victoria County, Nova Scotia is located off the famous Cabot Trail. It's northeast of Morrisons Lake. This lake is quite high up, at an elevation of 114 meters (374 feet).
Yarmouth County's Black Lake
The Black Lake in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia is about 27 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of Lake Rossignol. It's the third lake west of Route 203. The town of Shelburne is about the same distance south along Route 203.
