History of Bluejacket
Bluejacket started as a train station in 1871. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway (often called KATY) built a railroad line through Indian Territory at that time.
How Bluejacket Got Its Name
A post office opened in Bluejacket in 1882. The town was named after its first postmaster, Reverend Charles Blue Jacket. He was a chief of the Shawnee people. He was also the grandson of a famous Shawnee leader named Blue Jacket. In 1894, Bluejacket officially became a town within the Cherokee Nation.
Tornadoes in Bluejacket
In the late 1930s, two strong tornadoes hit Bluejacket. The first tornado struck on May 4, 1938. It destroyed some barns and caused harm to farms.
The second tornado hit on August 24, 1939. This storm caused a lot of damage to the town's main business area. It was a very powerful storm for the county.

Bluejacket is located in northeastern Oklahoma. The town covers an area of about 0.4 square miles (1.13 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
It is about 17 miles (27 kilometers) northeast of Vinita. Vinita is the main city and county seat of Craig County.
