O Canada

Bob and Margaret is a fun animated TV show from the UK and Canada. It was created by David Fine and Alison Snowden. The show is based on their short film called Bob's Birthday, which won an Oscar in 1994 for Best Animated Short Film.

The series is about a married couple, Bob and Margaret Fish, who are in their 40s. They live in England, then later move to Canada. They don't have children but share their home with two dogs, William and Elizabeth. Bob is a dentist, and Margaret is a chiropodist (a foot doctor). The show follows their everyday lives, dealing with common situations and funny challenges. It often shows how they handle simple things like shopping or friends who owe them dinner.

For the first two seasons, Bob and Margaret lived in Balham, a part of South London, England. But for the third and fourth seasons, they moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This move allowed the show's writers to explore new jokes about different cultures. The real reason for the move was to help with funding, as there were special tax benefits for shows based in Canada.

The creators, David Fine and Alison Snowden (who are married in real life!), took on a bigger role for the later seasons. They reviewed scripts and gave advice, but weren't involved in every tiny detail. Alison Snowden continued to voice Margaret. However, Bob's voice changed from Andy Hamilton to Brian George.

The show was shown in different countries. In the UK, it aired on Channel 4 and Ftn. In the United States, it was on Comedy Central and later Showtime. It also aired in Germany and France on Arte. In Canada, it was a very popular animated series on Global. Later, it also had a short run on Canada's YTV. You can find some seasons on DVD and streaming services like Amazon Video and ITunes.

Meet the Characters

Main Characters

  • Bob Fish (voiced by Andy Hamilton in Seasons 1&2, Brian George in Seasons 3&4): Bob is an English dentist and Margaret's husband. His parents are Daisy and Cesial Fish. His mom, Daisy, can be a bit tough on him, but she's nicer to his brother, Peter, who is a famous TV chef. Bob is usually very kind and understanding. Sometimes he accidentally says something that might upset Margaret, but he always realizes it and says sorry. He and Margaret love eating Chinese and Indian food.
  • Margaret Fish (voiced by Alison Snowden): Margaret is Bob's wife and an English chiropodist. Her parents, Tony and Maureen Heslop, really like Bob but don't always show Margaret the respect she deserves. Margaret often feels caring and goes along with things, which sometimes leads to others taking advantage of her. But when it's important, she learns to stand up for herself. Margaret appears in every episode with Bob.

Canadian Friends and Family

  • Melvin and Cookie Fish (Melvin voiced by Wayne Robson and Cookie voiced by Jayne Eastwood): These are Bob's friendly Canadian cousins from Mississauga, near Toronto. They are very cheerful and always see the bright side of life. They are proud Canadians and often say Toronto is better than London. Even though they love Bob and Margaret, they sometimes annoy them without meaning to. For example, they might show embarrassing home videos of Bob and Margaret. They have two cats named Buster and Bailey.
  • Heather (voiced by Vickie Papavs): Heather is Bob's kind and easygoing secretary at his dental office in Toronto.
  • Ed, Patel and Audra: Ed and Patel are dental hygienists who work with Bob in Toronto. Ed is a Canadian who loves the outdoors, and Patel is an Indian hygienist who encourages Bob to try new things. Audra is another dental hygienist at Bob's clinic.
  • Robin (voiced by Yanna McIntosh): Robin works at the women's clinic in Toronto and hires Margaret as the foot doctor. She seems to be of Jamaican background.
  • Guinevere (voiced by Tracey Hoyt): Guinevere is Margaret's calm and friendly secretary at the women's clinic.
  • Trevor and Joyce (Trevor voiced by Dwayne Hill and Joyce voiced by Robin Duke later Jayne Eastwood): Trevor and Joyce are Bob and Margaret's next-door neighbors in Toronto. Trevor is a lazy neighbor who loves watching TV, while Joyce is a hardworking person. They often argue.
  • Gary: Gary is Trevor and Joyce's son. He used to be in the army cadets and has a crush on Bob's secretary, Heather.

British Friends and Family

  • Daisy: Bob's mother.
  • Peter: (voiced by Steve Coogan) Bob's brother, who is a successful television chef.
  • Cathy Beatles and Ken Baxter: (Ken Baxter voiced by Steve Brody) Cathy and Ken were friends with Margaret in London, but Bob didn't like them much. Cathy often got annoyed by Ken's silly actions.
  • Penny: (voiced by Doon Mackichan) Penny was Bob's secretary at his dental office in London. She was not a very good employee, which caused some problems for Bob and Margaret.
