How Bonita Got Its Name

The name Bonita comes from a ranch owned by Henry Ernest Cooper, Sr., in 1884. This ranch grew lemons. The first lemons were planted here in 1871. The area even created a special type of lemon called the Bonnie Brae Lemon.

The Sweetwater Dam

In 1888, the Sweetwater Dam was built. This created the Sweetwater Reservoir. It changed the valley's geography forever. In 1906, heavy rains caused the dam to break. The Lower Sweetwater Valley was completely flooded. Bonita has had minor floods since then, usually from heavy rains.
