Bookham Knoll is a gentle, rounded hill located in the beautiful county of Dorset in southern England. It stands about 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) southeast of the village of Buckland Newton. This hill reaches a height of 211 metres (692 feet) above sea level.
What is Bookham Knoll?
Bookham Knoll is part of the Dorset Downs, a range of chalk hills in Dorset. Its height and shape make it a notable feature in the local landscape. The hill's prominence, which is how much it rises above the land around it, is 43 metres (141 feet). This measurement means it qualifies as a Tump. A Tump is a hill that has a certain amount of prominence, making it stand out from its surroundings.
The Landscape Around Bookham Knoll
Most of Bookham Knoll is open farmland, meaning it's used for growing crops or raising animals. You won't find many trees directly on the hill itself. Roads surround the hill on all sides. The B3143 road runs along its western edge. On the other three sides, smaller roads connect tiny villages like Rew, Sharnhill Green, and Bookham. The hill gets its name from the hamlet of Bookham.
To the east of the hill, a small stream begins. This stream is a tributary, or a smaller river that flows into a larger one, of the River Lydden. This stream starts in a dip between Bookham Knoll and a nearby hill called Church Hill. Church Hill is actually part of a larger hill known as Ball Hill.
Exploring the Area
If you enjoy walking, you might be interested in the Wessex Ridgeway. This long-distance walking path runs from east to west. It follows the ridge formed by Ball Hill and Church Hill. The Wessex Ridgeway passes about a kilometre (0.6 miles) south of Bookham Knoll. It offers great views of the Dorset countryside.
