Boquerón is a small community, also known as a barrio, located in the town of Las Piedras, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,824 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.

A Look Back: Boquerón's History
How Boquerón Became Part of the U.S.
Boquerón, like the rest of Puerto Rico, has an interesting history. It used to be under the control of Spain. After a big conflict called the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
This treaty made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory that belongs to the U.S. but isn't a state and doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Counting the People: Early Census Records
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Boquerón barrio, combined with a nearby area called Collores, had a total population of 1,528 people.
