The Story of Boudin Bakery
Boudin Bakery was started in 1849 by Isidore Boudin. His family were expert bakers from Burgundy, France. Isidore mixed the special sourdough bread that miners ate during the California Gold Rush with French baking styles. This made a unique and delicious bread!
A Family Business
A skilled baker from Italy, Steven Giraudo, bought the bakery in 1941. He had worked at Boudin when he first came to America. Later, in 1993, he sold the bakery. But don't worry, the story doesn't end there! Steven Giraudo's grandson, Daniel, bought the bakery back in 2002.
Under Daniel's leadership, Boudin's delicious products are now sold all over the world. You can find their bread in big stores like Costco and Safeway.
Where to Find Boudin
Boudin Bakery has many locations. You can find them at Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco near San Francisco Bay. There's also a Boudin Bakery at Disney California Adventure Park! Plus, there are about 30 other Boudin cafés all around California.
The main bakery in San Francisco is in the Richmond District, San Francisco. It's on the corner of 10th Avenue and Geary Boulevard.
The Bakery Tour
If you visit Disney California Adventure, you can go on "The Bakery Tour". It's a fun way to learn how sourdough bread is made. You'll see how they use the same special "starter" (a mix of yeast and bacteria) that Boudin Bakery has used since the Gold Rush days! This starter is what gives their sourdough its unique taste.
