A Look Back at Bouldercombe's History

Bouldercombe started in 1865. This was when gold was found nearby at Crocodile Creek. Many miners quickly moved to the area. Within a year, over 2,000 miners lived there.

Early Days as Crocodile

The town was first called Crocodile. It was named after the nearby creek. A post office opened in 1866. Land was sold in 1867.

The First School in Town

A school called Crocodile Creek Provisional School opened in 1871. It closed for a bit but reopened in 1881. Later, it moved to a new building in Bouldercombe. In 1900, it was renamed Bouldercombe State School.

Gold Rushes and Population Changes

By 1876, the first gold rush ended. The town's population dropped to 149 people. But in 1897, more gold was found at Mount Usher. This caused the population to grow again. For a short time, over 1,000 people lived there.

Local Businesses and Transport

The first Bouldercombe Post Office opened in 1883. The Royal Hotel opened its doors in 1897. This hotel is still open today!

The old Dawson Valley railway line used to run through the area. It had stations like Bundaleer and Moonmera. The name Moonmera comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "bottom of the hill."

Farming and Industry

After the gold rushes, Bouldercombe became known for growing citrus fruits. In 1976, a brickworks was built. This helped create building materials.
