History of Bow Mar
How Bow Mar Started
In the late 1800s, the area where Bow Mar is now was mostly farmland. These farms grew food for nearby cities like Denver and Littleton.
The town's name, Bow Mar, comes from two nearby lakes: Bowles Lake and Marston Lake. These lakes were named after two early farmers in the area, Joseph Bowles and John Marston. You can still find the old Bowles family farmhouse and barn south of the town today.
Building the Town
After World War II, Denver started to grow a lot. Developers bought the farmland in Bow Mar to build homes for families. The very first house in Bow Mar was built in 1947 by Lloyd and Eleanor King. Most of the neighborhood was built by the end of the 1950s.
In 1958, Bow Mar officially became a town. It was unique because it stretched across both Arapahoe and Jefferson counties. Many of the first homes were built in a style called "prairie-style architecture," inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. These homes were often one story tall and built on large lots with wide streets. Today, many houses are being updated or replaced with new ones.
