History of Bowlus
Many of the first people who settled in the Bowlus area came from Silesia, a region in Poland. The city of Bowlus was planned in 1907. It was named by officers from a railroad company. This company was called the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad.
A post office opened in Bowlus in 1907. The city officially became a village in September 1908. It separated from the Two Rivers Township in February 1919.
In its early days, Bowlus was important for lumbering. There were many oak, maple, elm, and white pine trees. This led to a sawmill, a lumberyard, and even a barrel factory. The Bowlus Brick & Tile Co. also used clay from the Two River to make bricks and tiles.
Geography and Location
Bowlus is located in the southwestern part of Morrison County. It is surrounded by Two Rivers Township. The city is about 3 miles (5 km) west of the Mississippi River. It is also 5 miles (8 km) east of Elmdale. Bowlus shares a ZIP Code (56314) with Elmdale. The county seat, Little Falls, is about 13 miles (21 km) north of Bowlus.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Bowlus covers an area of 1.28 square miles (3.31 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The Two River flows through the southeast corner of the city. This river is a direct branch of the Mississippi River.
Main roads in Bowlus include Morrison County Roads 24 and 26. State Highway 238 and Main Street are also important routes.

Bowlus Fun Day
Bowlus Fun Day is also known as Bowlus Days. It is a special event for the whole town. The local fire department sponsors this event. It happens on the first Sunday of July each year. For 30 years, this fun day has attracted up to 1,000 visitors.
