Braadworst facts for kids
A braadworst (say "brahd-worhst") is a yummy, big Dutch sausage. It's often made from pork, but sometimes beef or veal is used too. This sausage is seasoned with spices like pepper and nutmeg. Other tasty spices such as cloves, sage, or fennel seeds can also be added.
Along with another Dutch sausage called rookworst, braadworst is often served with a traditional Dutch dish called stamppot. But you can enjoy it with many other meals as well! You'll find braadworst all over the Netherlands and in Flanders (which is part of Belgium).
What's in a Name?
The name braadworst means "roast sausage" in Dutch. Another name for it is verse worst, which simply means "fresh sausage." This name helps tell it apart from sausages that are dried or cured.
How It's Cooked
Most of the time, braadworst is cooked by frying it in a pan with a good amount of butter. When the weather is warm, especially in summer, you might also see it cooked on a barbecue. It's a popular choice for outdoor grilling!
Dutch vs. German Sausages
Sometimes, the Dutch word braadworst is used for the German sausage called Bratwurst. However, these two sausages are actually quite different! To avoid confusion, people might call the German version by its original name, Bratwurst, or they might say Duitse braadworst, which means "German braadworst."
Family Ties
The Dutch verse worst or braadworst is the direct ancestor of a more famous sausage from South Africa called boerewors. The boerewors was created by Afrikaner settlers, who were originally from the Netherlands. Even today, the two sausages look and taste quite similar!
