The town of Brashear was officially started in 1872. It was named after Richard Matson Brashear. He was a well-known farmer and businessman in the area. His father, William Gowan Brashear, was one of the first white settlers in this region around 1842.

Before Brashear: Paulville

Before Brashear, there was a small village called Paulville. It was also known as Paultown. This village was about a mile north of where Brashear is now. Walker Paul started Paulville around 1855. It was an important place for trading goods from nearby farms. Paulville also had a grist mill, which was a place to grind grain into flour.

During the American Civil War, the grist mill was burned down. This was done to stop Confederate soldiers from getting supplies.

The Railroad Arrives

In 1872, the Quincy, Missouri & Pacific Railroad was built. A train station was planned for the new town of Brashear. This caused many people and businesses from Paulville to move south to Brashear.

Through the late 1800s and early 1900s, Brashear's business area changed a lot. Events like the Great Depression and people moving more easily after World War II also brought changes. In 1950, Brashear had only 152 people. Since then, its population has slowly grown. Today, some businesses remain, but most residents travel to nearby Kirksville or Edina for shopping and jobs.
