Brayton Ives (born August 23, 1840 – died October 22, 1914) was an important American leader. He was the president of the Northern Pacific Railway and also led the New York Stock Exchange. He was also a brave officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Who Was Brayton Ives?
Brayton Ives was born in Farmington, Connecticut, on August 23, 1840. His parents were William A. Ives and Julia Root. He went to Yale University and earned his degree in 1861.
A Life of Service and Business
Brayton Ives was a soldier during the American Civil War. He served as an assistant to a general. Later, he became a Colonel of the 1st Connecticut Cavalry Regiment. He was recognized for his bravery in several battles. These included Ream's Station, Deep Bottom, Five Forks, and Sailor's Creek. Because of his courage, he was given the honorary rank of Brigadier General.
After the war, Ives became a very successful businessman in New York. By 1868, he was a well-known financier. He served two terms as the president of the New York Stock Exchange. This is where stocks and shares are bought and sold.
He was also the president of the Western National Bank of New York for many years. In 1893, he became the president of the Northern Pacific Railway. This was a major railroad company. At the time of his death, he was also leading several other large companies. These included milling companies and another railway company. In 1912, he retired from the Metropolitan Trust Company due to his health.
Family and Interesting Facts
Brayton Ives married Eleanor Anderson Bissell on February 6, 1867. They had four children together. Their children were Sherwood, Winifred, Eunice, and Frances.
In 1899, the family bought a large summer home. It was a brick mansion with stables and land along the Hudson River. Brayton Ives also survived a famous ship accident. In January 1909, he was on the British ocean liner RMS Republic when it sank.
Brayton Ives passed away in Ossining, New York, on October 22, 1914. His wife, Eleanor, died later in 1927. She left her money to their two surviving daughters. A famous actor named Oliver Platt is one of his descendants.
His Amazing Collections
Brayton Ives was a passionate collector. He loved to collect ceramics and other art objects. He also had a huge library of books. His library had more than 6,000 books! Many of these were very old and rare, printed before 1501.
He owned a very special book called a Gutenberg Bible. This was one of the first books ever printed using movable type. He also had early copies of famous books like those by Euclid and the ancient Greek stories, the Iliad and the Odyssey. He even had 200 rare books about the early history of America.
Besides art and books, Ives collected rare and historical swords. When he stopped collecting, his valuable sword collection was sold. It was later donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This was thanks to the efforts of Mr. Heber R. Bishop, William Thompson Walters, and the American Art Association.
