Brent South was an area in London that had its own representative in the UK Parliament. This special area, called a constituency, was created in 1974. It was abolished in 2010.

When it was abolished, the area of Brent South was split up. Parts of it became new constituencies like Brent Central, Brent North, and Hampstead and Kilburn.

From the time it was created until it was abolished, Brent South always elected a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Labour Party. These MPs usually won by a lot of votes.

What Was a Constituency?

A constituency is like a special district or area. People living in that area get to vote for one person to represent them in the UK Parliament. This person is called a Member of Parliament (MP). The MP then speaks up for the people in their constituency.

Where Was Brent South Located?

Brent South was located in the London Borough of Brent. This area included different parts of London. Some of the main areas it covered were Kensal Green, Harlesden (which included Park Royal and Stonebridge), and parts of Wembley (like the town centre, Alperton, and Tokyngton). From 1997, it also included parts of southern Kingsbury.

The boundaries of Brent South changed a few times over the years:

  • 1974–1983: It included wards like Alperton, Harlesden, Kensal Rise, and Wembley Central.
  • 1983–1997: One ward (Chamberlayne) was removed, and a new one (Tokyngton) was added.
  • 1997–2010: Another ward (St Andrews) was added to the area.

A Diverse Community

Brent South was known for being a very multicultural area. This means many different cultures and backgrounds lived there. In 1991, more than half of the people in the constituency were from different ethnic minority backgrounds. This made it one of the most diverse areas in England at the time.

Who Represented Brent South?

The people of Brent South elected three different Members of Parliament during its existence. All of them were from the Labour Party.
