Brookline used to be a small village in Greene County, Missouri, in the United States. In the year 2000, about 326 people lived there.
History of Brookline
Brookline was started in 1871. This happened when the railroad tracks reached that area. A post office, named Brookline Station, also opened in 1871. The village got its name from a place called Brookline, Massachusetts.
How Brookline Joined With Republic
In 2005, Brookline joined with a nearby city called Republic. People in both places voted to make this happen. Even though they joined, people still use the names Brookline and Republic for each area. However, the city of Republic now governs the entire town.
After the joining, the signs for Brookline's city limits were taken down. They were replaced with signs for Republic. You can still see small markers on the main road in Brookline. These markers are used by Missouri for places that are not officially cities. Brookline still has its own post office and ZIP code. This means it is still the official address name for the former community.
This was part of an agreement between the City of Republic and the Village of Brookline. The agreement said:
“Name of Consolidated Municipality – The name of the consolidated municipality shall be “City of Republic.” To help preserve the identity of the Village, the City will place signs with text “Village of Brookline” at the current corporate limits of the Village. Placement of signage is subject to State sign regulations when placed in State right-of-way. The City of Republic will work with the United States Postal Service to help preserve the history and operation of the Brookline Station Post Office.”
