Broughton is a town in Lincolnshire, England. It is built on an old Roman road called Ermine Street. In 2021, about 5,434 people lived there. Broughton is about 2 miles (3.2 km) north-west of the town of Brigg. Smaller areas like Wressle, Castlethorpe, and part of Scawby Brook are also part of Broughton.
A Long History
People have lived in Broughton for a very long time! Stone tools from the New Stone Age (Neolithic period) have been found here. This shows that ancient people lived and worked in the area. Pottery from the Bronze Age has also been discovered. Old burial sites were found around 1850.
St Mary's Church
Broughton has a special church called St Mary's Church. It is a very old building, dating back to the 11th century. The church has a rare Saxon staircase tower. There are only four such towers in all of England! These towers are very unique.
Near Broughton, there was once a place called Gokewell Priory. This was a home for a group of nuns. It was started in the late 12th century.
Local Nature and Fun
To the west and north, Broughton has large woodlands. These woods stretch towards Dragonby, Scunthorpe, and Appleby.
Inside these woods, you can find a nice hotel. It has a big golf course with 27 holes. It used to be called Forest Pines. Now it is a Doubletree by Hilton hotel. Many people still call it Forest Pines.
Town or Village?
Many people think Broughton is a village. However, it officially became a town in 1974. Even though it is a town, it still has a village hall. In 2011, Broughton was a bit bigger than its neighbour, Brigg. This was because of new houses built in the Scawby Brook area.
