Brownsville is a small city in Houston County, Minnesota, United States. In 2020, about 566 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a rich history.

History of Brownsville

A post office opened in Brownsville in 1852. The city was officially planned and laid out in 1854. Two brothers, Job and Charles Brown, did this work. They named the city after themselves.

A big fire sadly destroyed much of Brownsville in October 1920. The fire caused about $75,000 worth of damage. The train station and eight other buildings were lost.

The local newspaper, the Brownsville News, started in 1885. It stopped being published in October 1920, right after the big fire. For a while, its news was included in other local papers.

Brownsville covers an area of about 1.94 square miles (5.02 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

The main roads in Brownsville are Minnesota State Highway 26 and County Road 3. County Road 3 is also known as Main Street.
