A Look Back: Brownton's History
Brownton started in 1877. It was named after Alonzo L. Brown, who owned the land where the city was built. A post office opened in Brownton in 1878. The city officially became a city in 1886.
Where is Brownton?
Brownton is located in the southwestern part of McLeod County. It sits on the south side of Buffalo Creek. This creek is part of the Crow River system. The Crow River flows northeast into the famous Mississippi River.
Roads and Travel
A major road, U.S. Highway 212, runs just south of Brownton.
- If you go east on Highway 212 for about 11 miles, you will reach Glencoe. Glencoe is the main city in McLeod County.
- If you go west for about 7 miles, you will find Stewart.
Another important road, Minnesota State Highway 15, is about 1 mile west of Brownton.
- Going north on Highway 15 for 11 miles leads to Hutchinson.
- Going south for 13 miles takes you to Winthrop.
