The Story of Bruceville
Bruceville was named after Lucien N. Bruce. He gave land for the train station. Many people from Mastersville moved to Bruceville. Mastersville was a town two miles north that the railroad missed.
By 1900, Bruceville had about 289 people. It also had several businesses. A separate school district started in 1904. A bank was open in Bruceville from 1907 to 1927. The town had about 500 people in the 1930s and 1940s. But its population began to shrink after the war. By 1970, only 25 people lived there.
The Story of Eddy
Eddy was first called "Marvin." It was renamed in 1882 for Everett B. Eddy. He was a railroad manager. By the mid-1880s, Eddy had 150 people. It had three stores, two churches, a school, and a gristmill.
Eddy grew quickly in the 1890s. Some people thought its population reached 700. A bank opened in 1901. In 1928, the schools in Bruceville and Eddy joined together. This was the first school merger in McLennan County. By the late 1920s, Eddy had about 450 residents. The population dropped to 350 by the mid-1940s. But it grew to around 600 in the 1960s. This was because better roads made it easier for people to travel.
