Born Pine Ridge, South Dakota

Bryan V. Brewer was the leader, or president, of the Oglala Sioux Tribe from 2012 to 2014. He worked to improve life for his community on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Leading the Oglala Sioux Tribe

During his time as president, Bryan Brewer focused on important issues for his people. He worked hard to address problems caused by alcohol sales near the reservation's border.

Protecting the Community

In 2013, President Brewer joined a protest in Whiteclay, a town just outside the reservation. He and other community members, like Debra White Plume, peacefully tried to stop trucks carrying alcohol from entering Whiteclay. His goal was to protect the Pine Ridge community from the negative effects of alcohol. He also strongly supported keeping alcohol out of Pine Ridge itself.

Supporting Health and Safety

After his presidency, Bryan Brewer continued to speak up for his community. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he supported the health checkpoints set up by the Oglala Sioux Tribe. These checkpoints helped keep the community safe from the virus, even when the governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem, asked for them to be removed.
