Buga, officially known as Guadalajara de Buga, is a city and municipality in the Valle del Cauca Department of Colombia. It is famous for its beautiful Basilica del Señor de los Milagros. This church holds a special image of Christ called el Señor de los Milagros, which means "the Lord of the Miracles".
Buga is also a place where many cattle are raised. It is about 74 kilometers (46 miles) away from the big city of Cali.

History of Buga
Guadalajara de Buga is one of the oldest cities in Colombia. It was founded in 1555 by Giraldo Gil de Estupiñán. He was following orders from the Spanish explorer Sebastián de Belalcázar. The city was once known as Buga la Real ("the Royal Buga") or La Ciudad Señora ("the Lady City"). Many rich families from Spain came to live here in the New World.
Becoming a City
King Philip II of Spain officially made Guadalajara de Buga a city in the late 1500s. He also gave it a special coat of arms. This was to thank the city for its help to the Spanish crown. During the time of Spanish rule, Buga was part of the Royal Audience of Quito. Later, it became part of the Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada.
Independence and Modern Times
During Colombia's fight for independence, Simón Bolívar visited Buga twice. He was known as el libertador ("the liberator"). Special plaques were put up to remember his visits.
On December 20, 1995, American Airlines Flight 965 crashed near Buga.
In 2013, Buga became the first town in the Valle del Cauca department to be called a Pueblo Patrimonio. This means it is a special heritage town of Colombia. As of March 2021, it is the southernmost and westernmost town in this network.

Culture and Visitors
Buga is a very important place for many people. Over 3 million pilgrims visit the Basilica of The Lord of the Miracles each year. They come to see the special image of Jesus.
Cultural Activities
The city has a cultural center called Casa de la Cultura. It is an old-style house that opened in 1962. Here, you can learn about art and literature. Buga is also known for "The Holy Water Ale Brewing Company." This place is a hostel and a small brewery. It is one of the few like it in South America. Staff from Colombia and Germany work there. They can help visitors in three different languages.
Buga is also home to an organization called Instituto Mayor Campesino (IMCA). This group helps farming communities grow and develop.

Buga has a warm climate. The average temperature is around 23.6 degrees Celsius (74.5 degrees Fahrenheit). It gets a good amount of rain throughout the year. The wettest months are April and October.
