Bugle Ranges has a simple but interesting past. It was once a small stop for travelers and a place where local events happened.

The Old Bugle Inn

One important building in Bugle Ranges was the Bugle Inn. This was a place where travelers could stop, rest, and find food.

  • The Inn first opened its doors in 1852. Frederick Rumble was the first person to run it.
  • Over the next few years, other people managed the Inn, including Walton, Robert Sleep, and William Kimber.
  • However, the Bugle Inn only stayed open for a few years. It closed down, but the building was still used as a well-known landmark.
  • Robert Sleep, one of the former owners, continued to live in the area until he passed away in 1898.

  • Bugle Ranges held its own annual ploughing match. These events took place every September.
  • Newspapers reported on these competitions between 1853 and 1857.
  • Many other towns in the Adelaide Plains, Adelaide Hills, and Fleurieu Peninsula also hosted similar ploughing matches during this time.
