Bugle Ranges is a small area located in the beautiful Adelaide Hills of South Australia. It sits between the towns of Mount Barker and Strathalbyn. You can reach it by road or by the old Victor Harbor railway line. Today, not much of the original village remains.
History of Bugle Ranges
Bugle Ranges has a simple but interesting past. It was once a small stop for travelers and a place where local events happened.
The Old Bugle Inn
One important building in Bugle Ranges was the Bugle Inn. This was a place where travelers could stop, rest, and find food.
- The Inn first opened its doors in 1852. Frederick Rumble was the first person to run it.
- Over the next few years, other people managed the Inn, including Walton, Robert Sleep, and William Kimber.
- However, the Bugle Inn only stayed open for a few years. It closed down, but the building was still used as a well-known landmark.
- Robert Sleep, one of the former owners, continued to live in the area until he passed away in 1898.
Ploughing Competitions
In the 1850s, ploughing matches were very popular events in rural areas. Farmers would compete to show off their skills.
- Bugle Ranges held its own annual ploughing match. These events took place every September.
- Newspapers reported on these competitions between 1853 and 1857.
- Many other towns in the Adelaide Plains, Adelaide Hills, and Fleurieu Peninsula also hosted similar ploughing matches during this time.
