Burghclere is a lovely village in Hampshire, England. In 2011, about 1,152 people lived here. The village is very close to the border of Hampshire and Berkshire. It is also just four miles south of Newbury. You'll find it near other small places like Newtown and Old Burghclere.

A famous artist from the 20th century, Stanley Spencer, created amazing artwork. You can see some of his paintings in the Sandham Memorial Chapel in Burghclere. The village also has a church called the Church of the Ascension on Church Lane.

Community Life in Burghclere

Burghclere has many fun things for people to do. There are community groups like Stagecoach Newbury, which meets at The Clere School. There is also a Sports and Social club where people can gather.

Getting Around Burghclere

If you need to travel by train, the closest station is Newbury. Burghclere used to have its own train station. It was part of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway. However, this station closed in 1960.

Burghclere in Books

Burghclere has even appeared in famous books! In Richard Adams' well-known story, Watership Down, there's a rabbit warren where a rabbit named Cowslip lived. This warren was in High Wood, just north-east of Burghclere village.

Another book, Rural Rides, was written by William Cobbett in 1822. In this book, the village's name was spelled a bit differently. It was recorded as Berghclere.
