Burke is a small town located in Franklin County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,421 people lived there. This was a slight decrease from 1,465 people in 2010. The town is in the northeastern part of Franklin County. It is northeast of Malone, which is the main town of the county.
Burke also has a village inside it that is also called Burke.

History of Burke
People first started settling in the area that is now Burke before the year 1800. This place was first known as "West Chateaugay." There was a plan to name it "Birney," but the name "Burke" was chosen instead. It is believed to be named after Edmund Burke, a famous British statesman. The town of Burke was officially formed in 1844. It was created from a part of the town of Chateaugay.
An interesting fact about Burke is that Almanzo Wilder grew up on a farm here. Many people think he was from nearby Malone. Almanzo Wilder was the husband of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote the famous Little House on the Prairie books. Laura told Almanzo's childhood story in her book Farmer Boy. Almanzo was born on February 13, 1857, on his family's farm in Burke. His parents were James and Angeline Day Wilder. In 1875, his family moved away to settle in Minnesota.
Geography of Burke
Burke is located in the northeastern part of Franklin County. Its northern border is the Canada–United States border, with the province of Quebec in Canada to the north.
The towns next to Burke in New York are Constable to the west, Malone to the southwest, Bellmont to the south, and Chateaugay to the east.
The town covers a total area of about 115 square kilometers (44.4 square miles). All of this area is land.
Important Roads and Rivers
U.S. Route 11 is a major highway that runs east to west through the middle of the town.
The Little Trout River flows through Burke from the southeast to the northwest. This river is part of the Trout River system. The Trout River flows north into the Chateauguay River in Quebec, and eventually into the large St. Lawrence River.

- Cooks Mill – This is another hamlet located near the eastern town boundary.

- North Burke – This hamlet is near the northern town line, on County Road 29. It is a place where people can cross the border between the USA and Canada.

- Thayer Corners – This hamlet is east of Burke Center on US-11. It is also close to the eastern town line.
